SAYC Sailing Center Sail Team

The only thing more fun than learning to sail, is learning to race your sailboat!

SAYCSC has an established Sail Team program operating annually in the fall and spring. During our Sail Team seasons, your sailor will learn to race an Optimist or Club 420 sailboat depending on age, ability and size. We will be offering a Laser (ILCA) race team again in the fall 2026!

The Sail Team is currently comprised of an Opti Development team, an Opti Practice Team, a large Opti Green Fleet team (with two coaches), an Opti Advanced (RWB) team, and a large C420 team (with two coaches). The SAYCSC race team is a unique experience and has been growing in size over the years. As a member of the SAYCSC Sail Team your child will attend multiple practices a week under the coaching and supervision of US Sailing Certified Sailing coaches, and participate in 3-8 traveling regattas per season. In addition to regattas, SAYCSC hosts clinic days for each team every year, coached by world championship sailors and coaches. These clinic weekends are immersive and challenging, and we try to schedule those just before our Junior Olympic/most competitive regattas.

Our Sail Team mission:

To encourage all Sailors to strive to for excellence both on and off the water while having fun and being a team player. SAYCSC Sail Team emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline, and personal character to produce well-rounded athletes and foster a team spirit.

We pride ourselves upon our inclusive family atmosphere and personal growth opportunities both on and off the water.

Our 2026 Spring Sail Team season will kick-off with a parent/sailor meeting and Oyster Roast on Saturday, February 7th.

*Race team participation requires prior experience - your child must have attended multiple weeks of Sail Camp or have prior racing experience to join the Sail Team. SAYCSC hosts a mandatory Try-Out each September following the summer camp season for all new and transitioning sailors. Registration is required, and team selection will be announced thereafter. For all interested and planning to attend Try-Outs, we are hosting an informational parent meeting on August 5th 5:30pm - 7:00pm. While not required, we highly encourage all new parents to attend this informative session led by our Sailing Director.
